SS (Schutzstaffel)Under Heinrich Himmler, it conspired to expand and enter almost every sphere of Germany....It operated secret police, ran the concentration camps and racial extermination programs, and in 1934 formed a military wing known as the Waffen (Armed) SS. This was formed into Standarten (regiments) which, in the years to come, would be grouped into SS brigades, divisions, corps, and armies that recruited the cream of available men (including foreigners), and benefited from larger establishments and better equipment than ordinary army organizations.
