Born in the Old Mark of Brandenburg.

WW I: Ý

Rose to become Chief of Staff of 1st German Army Corps.

1930's Military commander of Berlin.Ý

WW II:Ý
Ý1938:

Commanded occupation troops in the Sudetenland, but was purged for his outspokenness about Hitler.Ý

1939:

Directed the blitzkrieg in Poland.Ý

1940

Directed the blitzkrieg in France.

1941:Ý

Checked in his offensives in the Ukraine by the Soviet army; he was recalled.

1942:Ý

Appointed commander of the Western Front, from Holland to the Italian frontier.

1943:Ý

He was repulsed in a counter-attack at Medinine (March) and outflanked the enemy at Mareth, (March).This was followed by up by a series of battles that eventually drove the Axis Forces back to Tunisia and destroyed the Axis Forces in Afrika.

1944:Ý

On the success of the Allied invasion of France he was relieved of command. But returned as Commander in Chief in September. December - his last great action was the Battle of the Bulge. After its failure he lost command.Ý

Ý1945:

In May he was captured by the Allies in Munich. War crimes proceedings against him were dropped on the grounds of his ill health.

Ý1946:

He was kept as a prisoner in Britain.
