He was repulsed in a counter-attack at Medinine (March) and outflanked the enemy at Mareth, (March).This was followed by up by a series of battles that eventually drove the Axis Forces back to Tunisia and destroyed the Axis Forces in Afrika. |

On the success of the Allied invasion of France he was relieved of command. But returned as Commander in Chief in September. December - his last great action was the Battle of the Bulge. After its failure he lost command.Ý |

In May he was captured by the Allies in Munich. War crimes proceedings against him were dropped on the grounds of his ill health. |
