Compared to the media which dominated the Gulf War, or even Vietnam, visual images of the Second World War were relatively scarce. There was gross censorship imposed on journalists, who were sworn into the army. They were in the midst of the action, but not allowed to report the truth. "After the war some admitted they were cheerleaders for a cause, not journalists at all." (The Valour and the Horror script)
Those artists commisioned by the government to paint the war were given free artisitic licence to paint what they saw; however, there is no money, now, to display many of thier telling works.
In this 'photo essay,' you will find some of those paintings and photographs which tell the story of the Canadian effort in the Second World War with a lucidity which can only be had through visual images.
