The Ram Kangaroo's were armoured personnel carriers - the first of their kind - that saw active service in Normandy in 1944Ý. They were Canadian Ram tanks that were produced by the Montreal Locomotive works based on components of the American M3 Lee tank. Superficially the Ram resembled the American Sherman but its main drawback was is under-powered armament. It initially carried a 40mm gun and this was later changed to a 57 mm gun on the Mark 2. The Ram never saw active service as by the time it was ready for production the Americans were supplying sufficient numbers of heavy tanks, mainly Shermans. In Normandy 1944, a number of them were converted to armoured personnel carriers. They successfully solved the problem of moving infantry at the same speed as tanks, and lowered infantry casualties enormously. |
