The Typhoon was a Hawker fighter that had originally been proposed in April 1937. The first prototype flew in February 1940, but the plane was unreliable. It was a plane looking for a mission as it had very poor performance above 6,100 m. (20,000 feet). It went through constant engine changes and it had a tendency not to start in cold weather. It entered service as the Typhoon Mk.IA, with twelve .303 machine guns, in late 1941. The Mk.IB `Tiffy' was equipped with four 20mm Hispano cannon and a clear rear Perspex panel to let pilots look aft. Eventually most of its problems were solved and it became an excellent ground attack fighter that could carry rockets and bombs in addition to the cannons. It proved to be from 1944 onward an excellent tank killer. |
